Racing Series

I've been developing a weekly racing series IC and could use some assistance figuring out the mechanics of it.

The series reflects typical North American oval track and aims to use the Hot Ring Sabre and Everon.  The citizens involved in the series wish to see longer races and would like strategy to be a factor.

Currently, races are limited to 10 laps - when racing around an oval track in testing, lap times are around 30 seconds meaning the races are right about 5 minutes long.  It also takes 80 laps for fuel to be an issue (40 mins of racing) which means that the strategy of fuel consumption/planning for pitting/etc. really would see the biggest impact on races over an hour.  I feel that it may be too long for some people's schedules/attention spans.

Any advice/assistance/suggestions are welcome.  We have a discord channel dedicated to this intent and access could be requested.

We've had our first exhibition race - we held a 3 stage, 30 lap race and paid the winner $25k (no entry fee).

On Wednesday March 1st we're going to have our second exhibition race - the "final" or "feature" race will have a purse (payout across all positions) of $50k sponsored by the Sandy Shores Carwash and Deduct Van and Truck Rental.

A rulebook is currently being written and will be available on the BLRP Weekly Oval Racing Series Discord.

  • 2 weeks later...

I will be giving this a +1

Especially after the races today and seeing how things had played out, i think it would be really cool to see the lap limit get upped so that we can push for some of the higher lap amounts and not have to worry too much about having to deal with stopping the race every like 3 laps or so cause some kind of issue had arisen.

We've had our Third Exhibition race and are now going ahead w/ an 8 week (Thursday evenings) Series w/ an owner's and a driver's points championship.

The Race Menu supports 20 cars (we had 21 on track), but many people had some issues (hardware related) w/ seeing the track/being able to run a consistent line.  We've developed some rules to assist with that including limiting the field to 16 cars (there's currently 26 registered).  Unfortunately, some people will not be able to participate in the longer "Feature" race; but everyone should have an equal opportunity with the qualifying heats and last chance qualifier system we've chosen to use.

Access to multiple radios (like a clocked-in tow trucker has) would increase efficiency... track staff would be capable of giving direction to racers w/o waiting on racers to clear the air of personal conversations, racers could communicate with their own crew, track staff could be in contact w/ an announcer who could then address the spectators and keep them abreast of what's happening on track.

There were some really exciting moments; two guys wrecking each other for the lead coming out of turn 4 on the last lap doesn't build the same emotion as it could when spectators just think two guys are wrecking.
